TummyTub Review and {GIVEAWAY!!}

I was fascinated with the TummyTub the first time I saw it. I was researching tubs for my daughter because she had outgrown her newborn bath tub that fit over the sink. I came across the TummyTub and thought “what a cool idea.” It is made to mimic the womb with the baby feeling secure and buoyant. Well, I thought that my daughter would be too big for the TummyTub or she would outgrow it soon after purchasing (I started my research when she was 7 months old). I was wrong, she fits just fine in her TummyTub (she just turned 9 months and weighs 19 pounds). TummyTub’s response when I asked if there was a weight or age limit: “The weight restriction is 35 pounds or age 3. Typically around a year, toddlers transition to the big tub when they can sit very sturdily and need no more support. Personally, my son used the TummyTub until around 15 months or so and well beyond that for soaking when he had a diaper rash or wasn’t feeling well. For soaking (as opposed to washing), it is suitable well past a year.”

Needless to say I was really curious as to what her 1st reaction would be when bathed in this new contraption at 8 months old. The first time I put her in it, she just stood for about 3 minutes. Then as she was reaching for the ducky she dropped she gently “fell” in. I thought she might cry because of her “entrance” method, but she loved it. I filled it up just a little below the fill line because the directions say as they grow they need less water (theory of displacement). That was still too much water. I ended up dumping out about 5 cups of water to get down to her armpits (where I feel most comfortable with the water level). She was cross-legged and then stretched out her legs straight up the sides. She even kicked her legs and splashed around! This is my daughter in her TummyTub:

I’ve been using the TummyTub exclusively for 3 weeks now. The most comfortable position for me when bathing her is to sit on the edge of the bathroom tub. I like to wrap my feet around the base- it makes me feel more secure. I really want the cute base that turns into a stool. I’ve found that I can’t soap up like I was used to doing in a regular tub. My solution was to wash her face first, then her hair as she is sitting in the TummyTub. Then I get her to sit on her knees and I can soap everything up and rinse before time for her to get out. I feel that just sitting covered in all that water also helps get her clean (like soaking in a bubble bath). I love this tub for 2 reasons: 1st, my daughter stays nice and warm during her bath because she is immersed in the water up to her arm pits (great for the cooler seasons) and 2nd, it is sooo “green.” Remember, I’m a little granola. I waste more water waiting for it to warm up, then it takes to fill the tub. I’ve found that at her size, ½ way to the fill line is perfect. The plastic is BPA, phthalate and lead free AND recyclable. I’m not sure why anyone would actually put this in the trash or recycle bin. I would “recycle” it by passing it down to a friend with a baby.

Some other great features:
  • Compact size. Some infant tubs are as large as your bathroom tub, the TummyTub has a small footprint so it won’t take over your bathroom and it would be easy to travel with it.
  • Anti-skid base and low center of gravity helps prevent it from tipping. I’ve found that if she is still standing it is unstable. I always have both my hands on the TummyTub when she is standing.
  • The design helps calm colicky babies.

  4. I think it's interesting that it is modeled after the experience of being in mother's womb. This comforts little ones and helps them feel secure.

  15. Once my baby outgrows is, I will probably give it away to my SIL, who's just starting the baby journey! I could also use it as a bucket for cleaning around the house, or as a permanent puke bucket. Gross, I know, but they're necessary.

  48. I was wondering "why not just use a regular bucket" and the FAQs page provides some excellent info, like it may not be safe, it's too low and narrow, and the bottom doesn't give support.

  77. Your review was more clear and possibly easier to follow than the Tubby Tub site itself. I had seen pics of this tub, but had not realized that it is supposed to mimic the womb.

    I love the video of your little one in the tub, kicking away. I like that this tub is so green as well!

    I currently get in the big bath with my baby, but that means we're using a lot of water for a short bath. It does keep her warm, though, and I enjoy the closeness. Daddy isn't sure yet if he wants to try bathing baby my way, and this tub seems like it would be perfect! I never much cared for those baby baths that lay the baby out with only a little water.

    I'd surely pass the Tummy Tub along to another new mother once my child outgrew it.

    Sorry to have rambled on so much!

  79. main entry: I would recycle it in one of two ways. #1 use it as a toy tub for storage but not on the ground or floor I would put 3 holes in the top edge and attatch rope to it so it can hang in mid air up high like a swing for toy storage that ways its out of kids way for safety and saves floor space.#2 to recycle it would be to make a plant terrium out off it in some part of the house like a patio etc. great giveaway I would love to win this for my great friend who just had her little boys 8 weeks ago so thanks for the chance!
