BABY SHOWER BASH Day 1: Exergen TemporalScanner CLOSED

My son has been sick with a fever a few times. Being a first time mom, I get really nervous at the first signs of a fever. I want to check his temperature at least every hour, but checking a child's temperature can be more than frustrating for the child and for the mom. I know my child is already uncomfortable. The last thing he is interested in is holding still long enough for me to check his temperature (I usually check it rectally for my little guy). It's a fight to get an accurate reading. This is why I am thrilled to have had the opportunity to try out the Exergen TemporalScanner. You simply press the scanner in the center of the forehead and move it across to the beginning of the hairline. It is easy and my son actually thinks it is pretty cool. Using this Temporal Scanner would also be a great way to check a sleeping child's temperature without disturbance.
How does the TemporalScanner Thermometer work?
(From Exergen Instructions For Use booklet)

"As you gently stroke the thermometer across the forehead crossing over the temporal artery, the sensor in its probe performs two processes:
First it scans like a video camera, capturing naturally emitted infrared heat from the arterial blood supply at about 1000 times per second, locking in the highest temperature it sense and;
Second, at the same time, a patented system measures the ambient temperature of the area where the temperature of the area temperature is being taken. The patented "arterial heat balance" (AHB) software then synthesizes the two separate readings to accurately determine and display body temperature."

  1. I learned :

    Arterial temperature is the same temperature as the blood flowing from the heart. It is the best determinate of body temperature.

    Thanks!

  2. I never knew that ambient temperature existed! And I learned that the thermometers are sensitive to it which help them be accurate.

  4. I didn't know that the temporal artery temperature changes faster than than temperature taken rectally. In other words, if my little one had the start of a fever I would register it earlier with this gadget!

  13. I learned that
    The TemporalScanner has patented software, providing arterial heat balance. This unique process determines temperature by accurately measuring the balance between the tissues warming from arterial blood and tissues cooling (warming) caused by heat loss (gain) to the environment. amsbolda@hotmail.com

    Why is it more accurate than ear temperature?
    A major reason ear thermometers are considered inaccurate by medical professionals is because the positioning of the probe in the ear canal is inconsistent, thus creating inconsistent readings and frequently missing fevers.
