Master Bedroom Progress

I mentioned in my New Years goals post that I was wanting to rid our master bedroom of yellow. I still like the color combo, but I have seen it so much, I wanted to try something new. And besides, I have a lot of yellow going on around the rest of our house.
Since our room is neutral, switching out pops of colors is so easy. I just replaced our yellow pillow with a fun red/hot pinkish envelope pillow cover that I made. I'm working on some art to bring in the color more and possibly other colors as well. We are not planning on painting our next rental in Minnesota so I'm thinking eventually a new headboard and more color will be needed in a room with all white walls.
Anyway, here is where we are at now:

Have you grown a little tired of certain color combos? What colors did you switch it up with?

Tracy's Dining Room

My brother and sister-in-law just recently moved into a new town home  Tracy has asked me to help unpack and make her rental feel like a home that they would want to show off. I agreed and then put her and my brother to work. We have quite a bit to go, but I did put her dining room together the first night.
I painted this dresser for Tracy before their move and it sure looks pretty in her new dining room. It stores extra dishes and kitchen appliances. The pretty jars on top hold a few of her bread ingredients.
So yeah, it still has some work to be done. We've talked about painting their dining set or just getting a new one and the possibility of curtains so we will see. Check out how it looked when I arrived that night:
Before.

I can't wait to show you what else we have planned for her home.

Big Girl Room Mood Board

Winner of the Tidy Books ForgetMeNot-Andrea @ Strawberry Chic
I am getting so excited to transform Allie's nursery into a big girl room. I decided to not go with her nursery hot pink, but still wanted her room to be fun, young, and feminine. The main color scheme in her room is navy and coral with pops of turquoise and gold. What isn't pictured is the navy and white quilt my mother-in-law is making, Allie's lace dresser, the rose petal mobile, and a gold mirror which will all be in Allie's new big girl room.
I can't wait to get started! Here are some fun things I am loving for her new room:

I'm thinking the Ikat Linen would be gorgeous curtains.
That rug is what made me decide to add a pop of turquoise to the color scheme. It's just so pretty. And that lamp-yeah, we belong together.

So what do you think? Love, hate? Let's hear it!

Kind-Of Paper Mached Antlers

I really wanted a papier mache deer head from West Elm (the top left below to be exact), but I am super cheap and my husband is even cheaper so I decided to take a shot at making my own.
I made mine quite a bit bigger than West Elms since I wanted it to make a statement in my daughter's room. Here is what I did:
 Start with construction paper.
Crinkle and smash the paper into the shape you want it to be. I made the head cave in to look more like a skull and then made the antlers separate.
Tape it all up into one solid piece. You want to use enough paper and tape so your sculpture is sturdy, not at all flimsy.
Rip more paper in thin strips to use as the top layer.
SOOO...my first attempt, I used a water/flour/salt/Elmers glue combo. FAIL. It was sloppy and ended up moldy.
I started all over and then ended up dipping my thin, ripped strips of paper in mod podge. I really like the finished look. It wasn't too messy and I only had to wait about 15 minutes between layers of paper strips.
Have you ever paper mached something? Like beyond elementary school? What "glue" mixture did you use?

Carson's big boy room.

I posted about my son's room about a year ago here. It has actually changed quite a bit, and not just because we moved. His toddler bed kind of broke and he was growing out of it anyways (he is one tall boy!). Since we have friends and some family spread all over the country, we thought we should upgrade his bed to a double so we could use it for guests when necessary.
Carson co-slept with my husband and I until he was 6 months old and has randomly ended up in our bed quite often since. When he learned to talk he would tell us he wanted to sleep with us because his bed was not comfy. How could you say no to that? Anyway, since we got him a new, comfy bed he has only ended up sleeping with me a couple of times. Maybe he really wasn't comfortable? Poor guy.
I had a lot of fun with his room. He really loves it.
The fabric covered cork board was a garage sale find. It holds all his tickets or souvenirs from fun things he has done.
Info on the license plate art can be found here.

Jars to hold his dad's golf balls that Carson would hoard anyway. Now he has a place to put them. And glow sticks. He likes to sleep with one every night. I buy them at Target-15 for $1.
The circle canvas was made by Carson's aunt for his second Christmas, the Carson (I am a child of God) sign was made by my mother-in-law, "Look what I made" board was made by my sister-in-law. Carson loves to hang his art up and this is the perfect place.

I spray painted the piggy bank and cut the work 'Oink' using my Cricut. Carson steals any coins he finds and stashes them in either his lion or pig bank.
I made a fresh circle punch mobile. I love the way it blows with the fan on.

And here's the boy I would do anything for. Love him to pieces (chocolate face and all).

Meet our family room.

Our family room is our comfy place that we spend a lot of time. We watch toons here, skype with our distant family and friends, have family home evening, and hold many of play dates.
The room is still evolving. However, it is the first time it has felt pretty to me.
One day, I would like to get new couches instead of our sectional. I made it two pieces because the room is quite awkwardly shaped and the sectional divided the room uncomfortably. My husband hates the way it looks, but I think it makes more sense.
Also while we did paint and stencil our master bedroom and our son's room (pictures soon to come), the green came with the house. I would prefer a pretty cream, but didn't want to invest the time/money into painting the room.
I plan on making a big typography board for over the couch.
I picked up the rad antelope (I think that's what it is) and the milk glass at an antique shop for cheap. I initially planned on painting the antelope gold, but once I got it home, I fell in love with it just the way it is. I just bought that plant last Monday. It is already on its way out. I have watered it and it is right next to screen doors and a window where we get a lot of sun. Any thoughts?

I love these pretty books without their covers. The bird was on clearance at Z Gallerie. I'm pretty sure it is supposed to be a napkin ring. Our master dresser that I bought at a thrift store for $35 included this side table. I painted it up real pretty and added another $0.75 Crate and Barrel mirror on top. The balls are Styrofoam with push pins. I only made one, my mother-in-law made the rest. She's so awesome. The deer candle holders were thrift store finds that I spray painted. The lampshade was on sale at Target.

Our fireplace is a pretty dark spot in the room so I added as much white as possible to lighten it up. I also loaded up our non-functioning fireplace with candles to make it feel romantic and warm.

Do you have any cool typography ideas? Do you shop at thrift stores/antique shops? Are there any particular items you always look for? How the freak do you keep plants alive???

Daughter's Room Update

Remember when I posted about my daughter's room here?
Well, we moved.
And I changed a few things. Not much, but a few. Like always, I am not entirely sure it is done, but done for now.

Our homeowners left behind curtains for our screen door. I washed and dried them and ruined them. They have two layers and the top layer ended up shorter than the back so I cut them in half, added a pocket for a curtain rod to go through, and added a bottom panel to make them long again using vintage white fabric with small pink and blue flowers. They are perfect in my girl's room. They really lighten/soften up the room. The side table got a little makeover with jewels and a mirrored top that I picked up at Crate and Barrel for $0.75! Woop.

The dresser also got a makeover. I mod podged lace on the drawers. It was really easy and has stuck perfectly even with my baby trying to scratch it off.

DIY Headboard

I had been planning on making a headboard for our master bedroom for about a year and finally got around to doing it. Thanks to my mother-in-laws step by step how to, it was actually pretty easy.
I started with a huge piece of plywood.
Drew half of the shape I wanted on a huge piece of paper.
Folded paper in half.
Cut my desired shape out of paper.
Traced the shape onto my plywood.
My husband sawed the shape for me.
I tightly stapled two layers of batting (found at Hobby Lobby) to the plywood.
I super tightly stapled my fabric (found at fabric.com-7 oz duck) to the plywood.
Hammered my nailhead trim kit (found at Beacon Fabric) around the headboard twice.
My husband and I love it so much! We are planning on hanging a sweet rhino head like this one over the headboard.

I also made the grey/white pillows with fabric from fabric.com.

You can see the dresser I refinished and the sunburst mirror I made hangs above it. My sister-in-law made me that awesome grey/white striped blanket at the bottom of the bed. It is even prettier in person.

Here is some art I made near the bottom of the bed, hanging next to another window. The typography canvas idea was totally stolen from someone else. I made it before pinterest so for the life of me, I cannot remember who I got that idea from. Anyone know so I can credit them?
Is anyone else working on their master bedroom? What projects are you working on?
